I HAVE A FRIDGE! GOD HEARD ME!
Just yesterday evening I was complaining to my mom that I didn't have any ice cream and that I badly wanted some.
I spent the whole morning not feeling great, with an ache in my chest. Maybe it's being tired. Maybe it's missing Hopoe, missing the team, the hot nights... or all of the above, among other things. But I wasn't quite feeling great, and I wasn't much hungry either. Plus because yesterday I had a water bottle mishap in my hand bag, all of my stuff got wet. When I opened my cigarette box, all of my ciggies were still soaked this morning... so they were goners. No way I can smoke that.
I bought a salad at the snack bar, then went to my room to put it there while I was going for cigarettes.
As I went into the corridor, a paper on the wall got my attention.
Top fridge for sale, 30 euros. In good condition.
Hi'iaka. A fridge for 30 euros, on-site, you don't have to buy and bring it here, GET IT. GIRL. You won't get any other chance.
Since my phone was charging in my room, I quickly went to fetch it and texted. Went to buy my cigarettes, came back. The person on the other end answered my text and told me the fridge was still available. I asked if I could see it. They said yes, and that they had to be gone by 6:30pm as they are going on a mission, so it would be good if we met up during lunch break. Since I was in my room already, I told them I was finishing my salad and going upstairs.
Fifteen minutes later, I was meeting up with a tall commander lady. I expected a gentleman, but nope, a lady!
I checked the fridge, everything was fine. We brought it down to my room. Twas a mess, with the guitar I had moved to free space, my laundry drying on the clothes rack (including two of my pareus), my undone bed, the pajamas on top, and the dirty laundry bag that I should find a place for. I need to reorganize my space a little.
She had never been to the ground floor. Not even got curious like me and explored the whole building. The upper floors feel liminal and almost belong to a horror movie. The ground floor is aged, but lovely. It's not renovated like in her room where it's very modern, but it's cozy as can be, she noted.
It turns out, this lady hails from Polynesia. I wouldn't have guessed, judging from her face. Strange how we always find each other out there. The big octopus, the one whose tentacles go all the way down to Aotearoa, all the way up to Hawaii, and whose heart beats under the marae of Taputapuatea in Raiatea, goes back to fetch her children, no matter the colour of their skin, or if their ancestors are from here or not. I guess she knows who those people are. Mana is hell of a thing, and we could think it's limited to the Pacific, but it appears that it's not. Some people seem to have it even if nobody in their family has been there. Mystery, mystery.
But sweet fucking Jesus I'm so happy. I'll need a Ben and Jerry's budget from now on. Plus if I can get my hands on cooking gear (yeah, might actually do the Hopoe tactics... if I can find a nice hiding place for my pirate gear!), I will save a ton on prepackaged food, which are my staple currently when I'm not eating at the mess hall. This shit's too expensive, good Lord. I need at least something to boil eggs, prepare rice... and all...
