Hear me out, but I have a sudden kind of fringe theory about why Hopoe was always saying I'm immature, that she had "passed that age", that she "didn't have time for such pee pee poo poo".
Given that she grew up in the 1990s and 2000s, I wonder if she didn't have a teen crush, or perhaps a best friend or a cousin she was a bit too close to, and she was told those things were childish, that those are meaningless, and had heteronormativity pushed onto her hardcore. That girls experiment with each other but that the real deal is with the boys, and then the men.
From a Christian environment like Polynesia (and the islands outside of Tahiti are more religious due to pretty much being rural)... it just wouldn't be surprising if she doubled down on that stuff because of the community's opinions. You just don't want your grandma or one of your aunties to spread the word that you're getting around with girls. Especially not in those times.
I also always had a feeling that I wasn't the first, so... if somehow I were to learn something, I just would not be surprised at all.
Still. I'm thinking of her. The festival I wanted to go to is beginning... it has just begun. I wonder if she's already here, or if she will be coming tomorrow or Sunday. Me... nah. Plus I've just shelled out three hundred bucks for the tattoo, so let's not overdo it, m'kay?
