So, my car is filled up. Like, REALLY filled up. I was a bit anxious that the commander guy somehow would let me down or decide not to take the fridge last time, but he came. I got thirty euros, but I was trying to figure out what to do with my microwave. The only place where it could've fit was on the front seat, but I also need to put my snack bag, my handbag, my laptop bag, and my change of clothes. Plus my warmable kitten.
I also saw Hopoe one last time from afar. The funniest shit is that her car still is parked behind another one so I still have no idea what it looks like. It's like, you see Hopoe but you may never know what the mysterious Hopoemobile looks like. Could be a sack of shit for all I know. Or an insanely pretty car. Or maybe the same one I drive, which would be the epitome of irony.
But that's not the biggest one here. For once, Hopoe's not the center piece...
What follows is absolutely novel worthy. So deadly ironic that I'm fucking cracking up in my almost empty room.
***
Commander guy comes, gives me the change, takes the fridge that was a pain in the ass to defreeze (and literally flooded the corner of the room enough that it took me two rolls of paper towels to actually clean it up). Pays me. We exchange nice words.
My door closes.
End of story.
...Or so I think.
Because that damn microwave, you see. I was starting to think that since I'm driving away tomorrow, I'll have to take it. Because I certainly am not going to knock on every door. I actually asked the commander guy if he wanted it, but he already has one. So I was left with a goddamn microwave that I have no idea what the fuck I'm going to do with.
You see, I hardly talk or see my neighbours. But as I take my microwave and start going to my car to check if I can't find a place for it, a Tahitian navy girl passes by.
Yes. She had to be Tahitian. That's the most hilarious thing. Polynesia does her sweet job again.
I don't know if it's the same one I saw in passing earlier (as I noticed that one because she literally rudely ignored me while passing by), but she comes into the building. We had never talked, nor seen each other.
Hey, maybe that's the same girl who has the Hinano car. That'd be dead funny.
My heavy microwave under the arm, I ask:
Hey, by any chance, do you need a microwave?
I see the tattoos on her arm. Her eyes look wide. They're naturally a bit rounded. And she got a bunch of moles.
Sure, why not, how much?
Oh, ten, twenty euros maybe?
She takes her phone out.
Oh, I don't use Wero.
Ah... I can give you change, but I only got ten...
Ten's good. I don't mind. I have some trouble fitting that thing into my car, so...
Sure, I'll go get you the change.
I hear her walking away. Then, only a few seconds later, a door opening and closing.
Wait.
She was in my corridor the WHOLE time?? And we only come across each other now? I don't even know her name, I don't know who she is, nor what she likes, and she had to be right on my way to get my goddamn microwave.
That said, I was surprised she didn't have one. Most people would have one, I'd expect. Perhaps she eats at friends' places or at the mess hall in the evening. Hopoe certainly had one, the cooking enthusiast that she is, hidden her forbidden burners under pareus and, occasionally, puts her panties of top to really make sure whoever's inspecting will NOT uncover them.
I'm pretty sure she was just one room or two away from me. There are no obviously Tahitian names around me but some have genuinely French names, like, you'd be surprised that they're not white. Many of them have English-language surnames due to mixing with Englishmen. Some even have Italian, Portuguese (Hani's last name is Portuguese, btw, and Tane himself is partially Italian through his mom, who has, well, an Italian surname despite being Marquesan)... in a nutshell, you can't tell one from the name only, not unless you know this kind of detail.
She gave me the change.
We were neighbours without realizing it all that time, I said jokingly.
Yeah, that's pretty cool!
And I'm going tomorrow, so...
Oh, are you transferred?
No, I broke my contract. Was employed in the other quarter and stuff happened, so I'm going.
Oh, well. Then, have a good journey, I wish you well, and thanks again!
Hi'iaka goes back into room, gets on blog, types, now that's the real end of story.
...Nothing's ever random, is it?
